“After nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” —Philip Pullman
I could not tell you how many books I’ve read over all the years of my life as I have read many. But I can tell you about the stories like Of Water and The Spirt by Malidoma Somé that changed my life, giving me new dimension and inviting me into worlds that I would other wise need a plane or boat (or possibly some other worldly vehicle) to travel to. And when traveling is not enough, I’d need telepathy to read the minds of people whose entire existence is shaped by their native tongue. This, I imagine, is why oral tradition was considered sacred so very long ago. In fact, my affinity for storytelling began with A Story A Story by Gail E. Hailey and Collin Bret’s Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ear. As a child, I was enticed by a world where animals spoke and there was no separation between earth and the sky gods. That childlike wonder has never left me.
I've learned Pullman’s words to be true, but more than that: stories are for the nourishment of the soul. I have since become the well nourished and the nurturer.
